A seed mixture with a strong dwarf ryegrass content is a good choice for sports pitches, as it establishes quickly and recovers well after play. Dwarf ryegrass can be very hungry and thirsty, so it needs the right feeding and watering schedule to perform at its best. For finer surfaces such as golf greens, cricket squares, bowls and tennis courts, specialist fine turf mixtures containing fescue and bent grasses are often better suited to close mowing and a smoother finish.

The amount you need depends on the product, surface size and whether you are new sowing or overseeding. As a guide, one 20kg bag covers around 400–570m² for new sowing, or 660–800m² for overseeding. An adult football pitch of roughly 7,000m² may need at least 12 bags for new sowing, depending on the product and application rate.
