Choose according to your ground conditions, grazing requirements and how you manage your paddock. Hunters General Purpose Grass Seed is designed to withstand equestrian use, producing a dense, strongly rooted sward. Hunters Traditional Meadow Grass Seed offers a ryegrass-free alternative with species that tolerate close grazing by horses.

General Purpose contains 70% perennial ryegrass, combined with fescues and timothy, and is designed for durable horse pasture. Traditional Meadow contains no ryegrass; it combines fescues, timothy and smooth-stalked meadow grass, using species with a less aggressive growth habit. Both are intended for long-term equestrian pasture.

For both Hunters General Purpose and Traditional Meadow, Barenbrug recommends:

  • Full reseeding: 14 kg per acre.
  • Overseeding existing pasture: 10 kg per acre.

Based on these rates, a 10 kg bag covers approximately 0.71 acres for a full reseed or one acre for overseeding. These rates apply to the two grass mixtures, not Equestrian Herbs.

Yes. Hunters General Purpose and Traditional Meadow can be used to overseed existing pasture at the recommended rate of 10 kg per acre. Overseeding can help thicken a thin sward, but issues such as compaction, poor drainage and excessive grazing should also be addressed. Prepare the surface to ensure good seed-to-soil contact and rest the area while new grass establishes.

Hunters Equestrian Herbs Seed adds plant diversity to horse and pony pasture. It contains perennial herbs, including chicory, sheep’s parsley, burnet, plantain and yarrow. It is a herb blend rather than a complete grass seed mixture. Contact our team for advice on incorporating it into your paddock.
