A 50L bag of compost covers around 1m² at a depth of 5cm, or 0.5m² at a depth of 10cm. The amount you need will depend on whether you are filling containers, topping up beds or improving soil.

Compost can be mixed with topsoil to improve structure, drainage and nutrient content, but it is not usually a direct replacement. Topsoil provides bulk and mineral content, while compost is better used to enrich soil, fill container or improve growing conditions.

You can reuse compost if the previous plants were healthy, but it may need refreshing before replanting. Remove old roots, check for pests or disease, then mix in fresh compost or fertiliser before replanting.

<p>Roses need a nutrient-rich, well-draining compost that supports strong root growth. For roses in pots or containers, <a href="https://eastridinghorticulture.co.uk/clover-john-innes-no-3-compost-25l/">Clover</a> or <a href="https://eastridinghorticulture.co.uk/melcourt-sylvagrow-john-innes-no-3-15l/">Melcourt</a> John Innes No. 3 is a strong choice because it is loam-based and designed for mature plants.</p>

For pots and containers, choose a compost that holds moisture while still draining well. Multi-purpose compost can suit many seasonal plants, while John Innes compost id often better for longer-term planting, shrubs, roses and mature container plants.
